Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the OpenVMS Educational License Program?
This program has been created in response to customer requests that we make
OpenVMS available to educational institutions at no cost. This program is a
new one patterned after the OpenVMS Hobbyist program.
- Do any of the existing educational programs go away?
No. All the existing educational programs remain in place, such as the
Campus-wide Software License Grant (CSLG) program.
- Who is eligible for the OpenVMS Educational License Program?
All types of educational institutions are eligible for this program (colleges,
universities, high schools, etc.)
- How does the program work?
An administrator at the school requests an access code over the web. Once a
school is registered, then anyone at the school can use that access code to
get license PAKs emailed to them. The OpenVMS Base Licenses are single user
(upgradable to multi-user through the
CSLG
Program). The Layered Products licenses provide unlimited usage for all
users on an OpenVMS system.
- What software is included in the OpenVMS Educational License Program?
The base license for OpenVMS is included and over 100 layered product PAKs may also be requested. The licenses are
good from August to August (one school year) and need to be renewed annually.
- Who at a school may participate?
Anyone associated with a school, as a student, faculty or administrator, may use these licenses.
- When will this program be up and running?
We're ready now! We'd be happy to have you sign up anytime you're ready!
- What hardware is supported?
Any Compaq (or Digital) VAX or Alpha supported by the OpenVMS Operating System
qualifies. This includes "Linux-Ready" systems purchased from Compaq,
used/donated systems, or other OEM Alpha systems. Please note that not
all peripherals are supported by OpenVMS, even though other Operating
Systems may support these peripherals. Care should be taken when
ordering or configuring a system to ensure that all peripherals and
options are supported.
- What about multi-user license PAK's?
Multiple-user license PAK's are available as part of the normal
Compaq CSLG Program
for those that need it.
- Can the definition of the school year for license PAK renewal be flexible?
This would make the administration of the PAK's much more complex. We are trying for simplicity
by using the August to August PAK duration unless this causes problems for too many customers.
- Are PAK's delivered in a loadable format?
Yes, all PAK's are delivered as an executable DCL Command Procedure (.COM file).
- How many users can log-on with the base OpenVMS license?
One user and one system manager can log-on with the base OpenVMS license that is
included with this program.
- Can the base OpenVMS PAK's be combined on a single system, resulting in more users?
No. Base OpenVMS PAK's cannot be combined on a single system to achieve more that one user and
one system manager. Multi-user PAK's for OpenVMS are available through the
Compaq CSLG Program.
- Does the person registering a school for this program, as well as everyone who requests
PAK's, have to agree to the same Terms and Conditions?
Yes, we have one set of Terms and Conditions that applies to both groups.
- How often are the CDROM Binaries updated?
It is our intention to provide an annual update with the latest copy of the
most popular products. If you would like the full Consolidated Distribution
on the normal quarterly basis, please see the
Compaq CSLG Program.
- Are rights to new versions included in this program?
Yes, the PAK's we deliver under this program can be used to install a new version
of the O/S or a Layered Product if a new version ships during the August to August
time frame.
